About us
San Luis Hills farm is located in a remote area 25 miles southwest of Fort Garland at the base of the San Luis Hills. It is at an altitude of 7,700 ft at the east edge of the San Luis Valley in south central Colorado. The farms 8.5 square miles that encompass 34 quarters (120 acres pivot circles) of irrigated farmland and a 900,000 cwt. capacity storage facility make it one of the largest farms in the area. The deep sandy soils under irrigation, high altitude and isolation make for excellent potato production - its main crop. Planting starts the end of April and the 92 average frost free days means harvest begins in September/October. Malt barley is the main rotation crop grown as well as some pasture for the Rio Grande Meadowlark Ranch which is part of the operation. The farm was started in the 70's by a German investment group and came under main ownership of the Mundorf family in 1992. In 1995 San Luis Hills Seed farm was formed to produce certified potato seed for the farm. Ten circles are used to produce high generation plantback seed under the name San Luis Hills Seed Farm. The other 24 circles are used to produce cetified seed field year 3 to 5 for sale under the name Affordable Seed. Our great isolation and sandy soils allows use top produce clean seed at lower costs and high quality tops for fresh market sales. We produce mainly russet potatoes but also other specialty potatoes as exclusive european yellow flesh varieties, Purple flesh varieties and fingerlings. See the variety picture page for more details as well as the variety guides.
