Potato Seed at San Luis Hills Farm Seed

Our Potato Seed

With potatoes you don't plant the true seed but smaller tubers. This means tuber size, quality and being free of disease is very important. Our seed is whole seed in the 2-4 ounce range. This is the best type of potato seed piece. The same type of seed we plant on our farm. Seed less than 2 ounces has been shown to produce less vigorous plants. Bigger seed will weigh more and add extra shipping charges, but your crop will be better for it. Whole seed is also less prone to soil diseases, especially compared to eyes scooped out as seed like some seed sources. On the long russet type potatoes there will be some long bigger seed pieces which you can cut in half to increase your seed.

How much seed do I need?

3.5 lbs is about 20 seed pieces and will plant 20' of row and produce 30 to 50 lbs of mature potatoes

5 lbs is about 30 seed pieces and will plant 30' of row and produce 45 to 90 lbs of mature potatoes

10 lbs is about 60-80 seed pieces and will plant 70' of row and produce 90 to 170 lbs of mature potatoes

25 lbs is about 150-200 seed pieces and will plant 180' of row and produce 200 to 250 lbs of mature potatoes

Potato seed is a living plant part and needs proper care. Store seed in a cool area. Store in a dark area if there will be a delay before planting and store in indirect light if you are going to plant them soon.
